Wonders of the Universe and Carl Sagan

Today has been an incredibly science documentary filled day. I watched a BBC Horizon programme on whether or not we are still evolving, a set of tribute videos to Carl Sagan and Brain Cox's Wonders of the Universe.

Personally I find Brian Cox's voice somewhat annoying but the visuals showed in the programme are amazing. I enjoyed some new analogies concerning the Second Law of Thermodynamics but I wasn't pleased with the emphasis on the heat death of the Universe. The fate of the Universe hasn't been conclusively decided with many rival theories of which none are mentioned. I felt that the public were being somewhat mislead here.

I wasn't very pleased with the plain Carl Sagan rip off of the Pale Blue Dot at the end of the show either. While Brian Cox may be trying to provide the future generations with an equivalent of Carl Sagan's Cosmos I feel he has failed to stir me as much as Cosmos has. It's an admirable attempt but personally it does not compare to Sagan's hypnotic voice and incredibly poetic script.

Nevertheless, Wonders of the Universe is worth watching for it's amazing visual effects and for providing some interesting examples to give an insight into difficult science.

For any Sagan fans I recommend the following the tribute video
